How to Lead Someone to the Lord

Example – After Gospel message, an invitation is given for people to turn their lives over to God through Faith in Jesus Christ.  How to help someone that has raised their hand:

  • F- FRIENDLY – Hey, my name is Ed. What’s your name?
  • I- INITIATE – I saw that you raised your hand, how can I help you?
  • S-Listen to their STORY – Evaluate their need.
  • H- Give them Hope

Open up a Bible and share the TNT verse (Romans Ten Nine and Ten) with them:

Romans 10:9-10  If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Here are the ABC’s to follow Jesus…

A, B, C’s of Salvation

A – You need to Acknowledge your need for Jesus.

B – You must believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again?

C – Choose to turn from your sin and follow Christ.

Lead them in prayer with prompts

  • Let them pray in their own words. If they get stuck, feel free to help them by asking questions like: “Do you want to tell God that you’re sorry for the wrong that you’ve done? Do you want to make a total change in your life and put all of your trust in Jesus?  Why don’t you tell him that in your own words?”
  • You Pray: “Thank you God that JIM has prayed to you and turned from his sin and confessed that Jesus is Lord!”

Follow Up After They Have Made a Decision for Christ

  • Give them a “Knowing God Personally” booklet – they can write their name in it.
  • Ask: “Can I call back tomorrow to see how you’re doing?”
  • Get their contact info and give them yours (maybe written on the tract).
  • “Do you have a Bible?” – If not, give them one.
  • Quick Bible Overview if it seems they are unfamiliar.
  • Follow up with a phone call the next day.
  • Invite them to a Bible-believing church that either you attend or connect them with someone in a church nearby that can make them feel welcome and connected

“When you have a brand new baby, you don’t let the baby starve. You also want to make sure that new believers are reading the Bible and feeding on His Word.”

-Ed Lewis

Open the Bible to the Table of Contents: Show them that the Bible is made up of 66 individual books.

There is an Old Testament and New Testament.  The Old Testament is before Jesus was born and then there was a 400 year gap between the Old and New Testaments.  The New Testament starts when Jesus is born.

The First 4 Books of the New Testament are called “The Gospels” and they are 4  eyewitness accounts of the life of Jesus.

The Bible was written by 40 authors over the course of 1500 years!  And yet, it works together perfectly.  God inspired each of the men who wrote His Word.

The large numbers in the Books are “chapters” and the smaller numbers are “verses”.

It is often good to have a new believer begin reading the Bible not necessarily at Genesis, but at the Gospel of John.  John tells about how Jesus was the Word that made all things in heaven and on earth and that He is the Messiah.

Quick Bible Overview

Many people that we encounter today don’t know anything about the Bible.  Here are a couple of simple facts to introduce the Bible and its format to a brand new believer.
